La Cité is now officially designated under the French Language Services Act
La Cité, le collège d’arts appliqués et de technologie, is now among the postsecondary institutions that have received a designation under the French Language Services Act of Ontario.
Ottawa, Tuesday, January 7, 2014 – La Cité now enjoys official status as a designated public service agency within the meaning of the French Language Services Act of Ontario. The provincial regulation making the designation official came into force on January 1, 2014.
The Chair of the Board of Directors, Lise Cloutier, notes: “La Cité is proud to partner with the Ontario Government to better ensure the right to postsecondary education services in French, to protect the Franco-Ontarian community and to further the advancement of French. This decisive action is being taken not only for our current students, but for the generations to come. It is taken with due regard for the long-term interests of a community that has lived in Ontario for four centuries.” Ms. Cloutier added: “I thank the Honourable Madeleine Meilleur, Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs, and the President of the Collège, Lise Bourgeois, for the exemplary leadership they have shown in this matter.”
For her part, Lise Bourgeois stated: “The designation is yet another guarantee of La Cité’s vitality, and further recognition of its special mission as a flagship institution of postsecondary French-language education. It confirms the wish we have so often expressed to see La Cité occupy a central place in supporting a linguistic and cultural community more concerned than ever with moving forward on all fronts.” In conclusion, she declared: “La Cité designated, this is a true guarantee of continued excellence and development!”
La Cité wishes to express its sincere thanks to the Government of Ontario, whose constant collaboration has made it possible to bring this important matter to a conclusion as quickly as possible.
Minister Meilleur also stated: “This designation is a significant step forward that confirms La Cité’s strong commitment to providing high-quality education to Francophone students and strengthens the college’s leadership position in French postsecondary education. It also ensures the continued development of programs and services aimed at training the next generation of Ontarians and thus will contribute to our collective prosperity.”
Finally, Ms. Bourgeois wishes to stress the importance of this designation, proudly announced today, for the students, staff and partners of La Cité and for the community is has been serving for almost a quarter century.
